My Blood Runs Blue

“My Blood Runs Blue” by Stacy Eaton

Published on… January 2015
Published as… Paranormal Romantic Suspense

An Excerpt from My Blood Runs Blue

“Julian, if you want someone else to go after him, I can send Gabe—” he started to say.

“No, Alexander, I can do this alone. I want him. I need to finish this myself,” I was quick to reply.

“You’re taking this personally, Jules.” He put his hand up to stop me when I would have interrupted. “You know it is better to not have a personal attachment to your assignment. I have allowed you to stay on this case because I know how good you are and how focused you can be. I also figure that maybe your close attachment to him might help you find him, to allow us to finally grieve and move on.” He looked down at his desk, knowing he had made a mistake in his words as he fingered the expensive pen in his hand.

I caught the “us” in there. Yeah, you loved her, too. But she chose me.

I couldn’t repress the sigh as I looked down at the beautifully hand-sewn Oriental rug at my feet, not really seeing it, but noticing its bright reds and blues, the same colors that were swirling around in my mind. Red for hatred and blue for the loss I had suffered. I was taking it personally, I knew that, but I would not allow any other warrior to find Damon and take him to the other world. This would be my vengeance, and mine alone.

I looked back up at him with that heated emotion stark in my expression as he continued.

He tried to redeem his words, and I almost laughed. “We cannot allow Damon to keep up with this behavior. Killing our females and children is not what we are about. If he continues, our race will end.”

“Master, I know it is not. I will be fine; I can distance myself from the attachment. You, of all people, know that,” I said calmly.

“Fine, so be it, but Gabriel is going with you this time,” he said, with a flick of his hand.

“You don’t need to send a babysitter with me, Alexander,” I retorted, as anger bubbled under my skin.

He regarded me with a quick tight-lipped expression which told me he was about to lose his cool. “It is not to watch over you, Julian. It is to assist you.

About the Book

The history of my relationships reads like the Titanic meets a tornado during an earthquake. Disaster after disaster. For some reason, I’m always attracted to lying jerks. I finally decided that it’s better to just have a good time and no one gets hurt. That philosophy worked for my last two years of college.

Then I let myself get pulled in again by a pair of broad shoulders, pretty hazel eyes, and kisses that turned my brain to mush. Of course he was lying to me. All my friends told me something wasn’t right, but I’m such a fool.

When it all went wrong, I didn’t expect his tall, dark, and handsome roommate being there to catch me. I think I love him. But can I trust him? He makes me happy. Can I trust myself?

Ashley graduated from college and isn’t looking for romance. What she needs is a job and the career she’s worked so hard to achieve. Can her dream of working overseas survive a man who seeks to capture her heart?

The Fairytale Keeper

“The Fairytale Keeper” by Andrea Cefalo

Published as… Young Adult/Historical/Fairytale Retelling

Excerpt from The Fairytale Keeper

Intro: Adelaide’s plan to humiliate the callous parish priest, Father Soren, backfires. She and her father, Ansel, end up in the stocks for a crime they didn’t commit. Proud to have thwarted Addie, Soren comes to gloat.

Excerpt:
Flutes trill and lyres thrum as the throng dissolves into the market for Annunciation Day celebrations. I catch the savory scent of roasting sides of beef and suckling pigs. My stomach howls. I haven’t eaten since Saturday dinner. Dozens rush at the archbishop, seeking an audience. Soren saunters toward me, smirking proudly.

He kneels, and I look him in his piggy eyes. “You thought you were pretty smart, did you not?” he goads. “You didn’t think I would find out about your little plan, did you? Oh, but I did. You would be surprised at how little I had to pay for that information, and now look at where you and your father are.” He cocks his head to the side. “I bet you should like to throw another stone at me now, would you not? But you cannot with those pretty little hands bound, can you? No, no, no…”

“You have become a thorn in my side, girl, and I think you’ll find that I can become a spear in yours.” He pulls a cloth from his robes, and I recognize it immediately. “This was your mother’s, was it not?” He places it beneath his nostrils and breathes in deeply. “She smells lovely…nothing like that day we burned her.”

I’ll claw out his eyes! I shove my hands through the holes as far as they can go.

“You are a feisty little witch!” he laughs. “This is the last of your mother’s things. I am having the rest of them burned in the streets right now. I am having all of your things burned in the streets.”

I pull backward, slamming the base of my head hard against the wood. My neck burns from the pain, but I try again, desperate to break through the stocks so I can get Mama’s clothes, her lavender satchels, anything that smells like her, anything that reminds me of her. Soren laughs.

“Do you want this back?” he asks smugly. Of course I want it back. He knows I want it back. “Swear to me, on your mother’s soul, that you shall sit in my church every Mass for the rest of my days. I shall save you a seat in the first pew so I can look upon your angry, defeated face.”

I collect all the saliva in my mouth and spit, hitting him on the side of his nose. “Keep it,” I hiss.

He wipes my spit from his face with the linen. “Very well, then. I think I shall use this to wipe my arse.” He rises and walks away.

About the Book

Adelaide’s mother, Katrina, was the finest storyteller in all of Airsbach, a borough in the great city of Cologne, but she left one story untold, that of her daughter, that of Snow White. Snow White was a pet name Adelaide’s mother had given her. It was a name Adelaide hated, until now. Now, she would give anything to hear her mother say it once more. A rampant fever claimed Adelaide’s mother just like a thousand others in Cologne where the people die without last rites and the dead are dumped in a vast pit outside the city walls. In an effort to save Katrina’s soul, Adelaide’s father obtains a secret funeral for his wife by bribing the parish priest, Father Soren. Soren commits an unforgivable atrocity, pushing Adelaide toward vengeance. When Adelaide realizes that the corruption in Cologne reaches far beyond Soren, the cost of settling scores quickly escalates. Avenging the mother she lost may cost Adelaide everything she has left: her father, her friends, her first love, and maybe even her life. Seamlessly weaving historical events and Grimm’s fairy tales into a tale of corruption and devotion, The Fairytale Keeper, leaves the reader wondering where fact ends and fiction begins. The novel paints Medieval Cologne accurately and vividly. The story develops a set of dynamic characters, casting the famous villains, heroes, and damsels of Grimm’s fairy tales into believable medieval lives. Though historically set, The Fairytale Keeper brims with timeless themes of love, loyalty, and the struggle for justice.

The Spoils of Olympus

“The Spoils of Olympus” by Christian Kachel

Published as… Historical/Military Fiction

About the Book

322 B.C. The Macedonian Empire is on the verge of civil war following the sudden death of Alexander the Great.

As a boy, Andrikos watched as Alexander’s army marched through his homeland of Greek Ionia after defeating the Persians at the Granicus River on their way to the total conquest of the Persian Empire. Soon he will be embroiled in their world, forced to flee his old life due to an unintentional crime.

Thrust into the army, Andrikos struggles to cope with the brutal yet necessary training which his superiors put him through to prepare for the coming wars of succession as Alexander’s surviving generals seek to divide and conquer the spoils of Olympus.

But Andrikos is not destined to be a nameless soldier; by chance he is chosen for a clandestine mission – and is immersed in a world of intrigue, violence and brotherhood.

The path that lies ahead of Andrikos requires him to shed his immaturity and take on the responsibilities and emotions of a man beyond his years as he struggles to save Alexander’s legacy from those who wish to usurp it.

The Spoils of Olympus: By the Sword is a historical epic which follows the advancements of one soldier from boy to man set during a time of global conflict.

About the Author

Christian Kachel Author Photo
I am a Long Island, NY native and current resident of Northern Virginia. While attending the University of Maryland- College Park, the events of September 11, 2001 inspired me to join the U.S. Army ROTC program and volunteer for three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan upon my commissioning into the Army Reserves in 2003. I hold three Master’s degrees and work in the defense industry.

The Spoils of Olympus has been a 2 1/2 year project that began in a Marriott hotel room in San Antonio, Texas while attending pre deployment training for a tour in Afghanistan in late 2011. The wars of succession immediately following the death of Alexander the Great have always fascinated me despite being overshadowed in the history books by the life and times of Alexander himself. Many great novels have been written about ancient Greece and Alexander but few fictional works have explored this forgotten era in western civilization where Alexander’s generals, who were once allies, battled each other for control of the largest empire on earth.

By the Sword is the first novel in The Spoils of Olympus series and introduces us to the story’s protagonist, Andrikos. The book follows him from an adolescence of criminality and capriciousness to his forced enlistment in the wars of succession; taking him from the battlefields of Asia Minor to the Achaemenid palaces of the Persian Empire. It is my hope readers will enjoy the story while learning about this important time in history.

Review: “Fireworks at Midnight” by Tara Quan [Tour Stop]

“Fireworks at Midnight” (A Witch’s Night Out) by Tara Quan

Available from: Amazon, AllRomance, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, iBooks, Kobo or Decadent Publishing
Released on: 12 December 2014

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review, as part of this book’s blog tour.

Description: Recent college graduate and part-time cat familiar Dulcina “Sweets” Gato is having the worst New Year’s Eve in living memory. End of year expenses trigger serious cash flow problems, and her microwave just went up in smoke. To make matters worse, her best friend’s overprotective big brother is back in town, and his return threatens to put a huge crimper on her nocturnal activities. The only thing she can look forward to is Madame Eve’s 1-Night Stand service. After all, she’s sick and tired of being a 21-year-old virgin.

Enforcement Agent Mikal Knight is a warlock on a mission. Having finally scored a transfer to Washington, D.C., he’s now at liberty to pursue the object of his desires—his baby sister’s best friend. But first, he has a vigilante to track down and a mysterious matchmaking service to investigate. Sent on an undercover operation, he resigns himself to a pointless 1-Night Stand on New Year’s Eve. As luck would have it, his mystery date’s identity might let him kill several birds with one stone.

Review: What could possibly be worse than a morning without coffee? A man as dark as it coming to your rescue who you have avoided for years. Dulcina, or Sweets, as everyone but Mikal Knight called her. was a struggling artist, familiar to a shut in earth mage, and in desperate need of a fun night out. Mikal, or Midnight, is an agent for a magical group called Enforcement, and half-brother to the earth mage Sweets shared a house, and a business with.

The thing I love most about this story is the fact that Sweets has visions of the future, a gift of precognition, very strong visions if something is about to happen, and has spent her adult life altering situations where she would end up connecting with Mikal. I love the lesson she learns that sometimes, in books, authors have a sick sense of humor, and play fate like a harp string. Without giving too much away let me say that the wait was worth it.

Tara Quan writes a fun and steamy romance story, she details every situation well, until you feel like you could be watching a movie, not reading a book. This couple is fun, and addictive. I wish this story was longer, because I could spend days lost in the playfulness between them, and the eroticism her writing offers.

I give this story five fireballs my only criticism would be the length of the story, which to me is not anything more than like standing at the end of a concert and cheering encore.

Jess Russell is Visiting! [Tour Stop]

The Dressmaker’s Duke

“The Dressmaker’s Duke” by Jess Russell

Published as… Historical Romance

Jess Russell’s Guest Post

What is the appeal of writing and reading regency romances?

We all want to be transported. Think of the appeal and popularity of Downton Abby. We love the clothes, the manners, the intrigue. We love the separation of class and how that separation gets muddy and the classes (dare we say) mingle. We love to have rules and see how they get broken and the consequences of breaking those tried and true rules.

In the world of Romance writing there is always a happily ever after—the HEA. It is a prerequisite for the genre. Unfortunately that is not always the case in the real world where so many women struggle to gain their freedom, both personally and economically. Most likely there is no knight in shining armor to ride in and save the day, but we are strong and resilient when given the tools to be so.

However, in 1810, the time of, The Dressmaker’s Duke, woman had very few avenues open to them. A good marriage was the penultimate. Other options were few and far between and the consequences were dire when women pushed up against society’s rigid rules.

I chose to write a slightly older Regency heroine. At twenty-nine Olivia Weston was considered old; definitely “on the shelf” in terms of contracting a good marriage. As a widow she has experienced some of life and knows how precious real love is. She will not compromise. But what opportunities are open to an “on the shelf” widow who is also a lady? Not many.

I sew and so I thought Olivia being a dressmaker would be a good fit for my story. By posing as plain “Mrs. Weston” she is freer to pursue her business, but by being in “trade” she opens herself to behavior no lady would ever be expected to tolerate. This is where Rhys Merrick, my monkish duke comes in and he poses quite a threat to Olivia’s good intentions.

The world of a Regency woman is narrow, but she still has all the feelings of a modern day woman, she just must express them in more subtle ways. I see this as a challenge; a kind of mental and social tightrope. I think the best historical writers embrace these strictures and learn to move gracefully and creatively between the confines of their chosen world. These characters are not just witty cardboard cutouts from 200 years ago, they are thinking, feeling folk with problems just like you and me.

I love the challenge of weaving a tale within these tight Regency confines while still making it authentic to the period. Pitting my strong, independent lady-turned-dressmaker against my tightly wound duke was great fun!

“Have you nothing else to compensate me with?”
the duke asked, as if mentioning the weather.
Olivia’s whirring mind stopped dead. Ah…now we
have it. Her vision narrowed. The bloody cheek of the
man.
“Surely you have something you can barter with,
Mrs. Weston?” he continued, paying not the slightest
attention to her most lethal stare.
Two could play this game. “I am a dressmaker,
Your Grace. I make and sell dresses. That is the full
extent of my commerce.”
~ from The Dressmaker’s Duke

About the Book

Rhys Merrick, Duke of Roydan, is determined to be the antitheses of his depraved father, repressing his desires so severely he is dubbed “the Monk” by Society. But when Olivia Weston turns up demanding payment for gowns ordered by his former mistress, Rhys is totally flummoxed and inexplicably smitten. He pays her to remove her from his house, and mind. But logic be damned, he must have this fiercely independent woman.

Olivia’s greatest fear is becoming a kept woman. She has escaped the role of mistress once and vows never to be owned by any man. Rather than make money in the boudoir, she chooses to clothe the women who do. But when a fire nearly kills her friend and business partner, Olivia’s world goes up in smoke and she is forced to barter with the lofty duke.

As their lives weave together, Olivia unravels the man underneath the Monk, while Rhys desires to expose the lady hiding behind the dressmaker. Will his raw passion fan a long-buried ember of hope within her? Can this mismatched pair be the perfect fit?
