A Chat with Cat

Bella: What is the name of the book where we’ll find you? Can you tell us a little about it?
Cat: I’m glad you asked! Let me take this opportunity to voice my heartfelt protest. I don’t know what my nutty author was thinking, but Flirting with Fire makes absolutely no sense.

The book is about me being stuck as a cat, and how I plan to spend my one night off. It’s NOT about my warlock boss, who’s so clueless he can’t tell the difference between a familiar and a pet. (He tried to feed me Friskies! Who does that?). And since he’s the absolute last person in the world I want to spend the night with, I don’t understand how he plays a role in this book at all. He doesn’t even know how to use magic, but his useless and extremely erratic power gets featured on the cover—go figure.

Bella: Tell us a little about yourself. Where do you fit into the story? What should we know about you?
Cat: I’m a 23-year-old apprentice witch and cat familiar. When my mentor Nonna The Great died, I discovered the remaining service term in my Familiar Employment Agreement is inheritable. Ownership of me passed on to her great-nephew, an attorney named Leo. Problem is—I can’t revert to my human form without my new boss’ express permission, and the silly man doesn’t know he’s a warlock. Until he says the magic words (which might never happen), I’m stuck as a cat.

Bella: What do you think of the author? Be honest. We won’t tell.
Cat: Considering the limbo she’s left me in for the past six months, I’d say the b—woman has a weird sense of humor.

Bella: How do you feel about the story you’re in?
Cat: The situation isn’t that bad, aside from being under magical house arrest and having to shift into a cat whenever Leo comes home. I get to snuggle on his lap while watching TV though, which is a huge perk. He doesn’t know it, but he’s paying me a very decent salary for my troubles.

Bella: Do you like being a character in the book?
Cat: Hmm… I guess the kickass spells I pull off on a regular basis make up for some of the inconveniences.

Bella: How do you see your future? Without giving anything away about the story, naturally.
Cat: Well, All Hallows’ Eve is my one holiday of the year, which means I’m free to leave the house and confront Leo. My sister thinks I should go on a 1-Night Stand date instead, seeing as how I haven’t gotten lucky in ages. I haven’t quite decided what to do yet.

Bella: What do you know about your author’s plans? Can we expect to see you in any future stories?
Cat: She promised me a happily ever after at the end of this book, and I’m going to take her word for it. Leo’s best friend is the hero in Frosty Relations, the second book in the series (it came out last week). Book 3, Fireworks at Midnight, is my little sister’s story, and that will be available at the end of December.

Bella: Let’s say they make a movie about this book. Who do you want to play you, and why?
Cat: I’ve never been slim (as in, nothing ever fits around the chest and hips), so I think someone with Jennifer Lopez’ body-type would be swell. I’m no where near as hot as she is, however.

About the Book

Apprentice witch Catalina Gato is prohibited from assuming her human form in front of her new employer without his express permission. Since he doesn’t know he’s a warlock, he can’t give it, leaving her in a familiar’s limbo. To make matters worse, she’s barred from leaving his house, and her attempts to enlighten him of his true nature results in burnt notes, charred walls, and exploding laptops.

On All Hallows’ Eve, she gets one night of freedom. Deciding some no-strings-attached sex might take the edge off the intense attraction she feels for her clueless boss, she signs up for Madame Eve’s service. When she meets her masked mystery date at the Castillo Capital, she realizes she might have gotten much more than she bargained for.

After being gifted a one-night stand from his annoying best friend, attorney Leo Difuoco reluctantly ventures to the Castillo Capital to celebrate Halloween. When he meets his oddly familiar green-eyed date in a Cat Woman costume, flames literally ignite, sparks magically fly, and life as he knows it changes forever.

Shanna Hatfield’s Guest Post

It Happened at the Airport

Shades of black randomly interspersed with hues of tan and gray surrounded me as I gazed over a sea of cowboy hats at the Las Vegas airport.

After working our way through the crowd, my husband, Captain Cavedweller, and I settled at our gate to wait for our flight. While he read the newspaper and jiggled his boot-covered foot impatiently, I observed those milling around. Like us, the cowboys prepared to depart after attending the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and many of the accompanying activities.

Each December, the city of Las Vegas takes on a country vibe as the rodeo comes to town, bringing with it hundreds of vendors, thousands of spectators, and a whole lot of fun. As we sat at the airport that morning, the idea for a story began churning in my head.

Since so many of the cowboys who compete professionally spend a good deal of time traveling, I began to wonder how many of them flew from one rodeo to the next. If they were flying, it made sense that they might meet a girl at an airport who turned their head.

I began jotting down notes for a story idea and by the time we reached home, The Christmas Cowboy (Rodeo Romance, Book 1) was born.

The sweet western romance tells the story of Tate Morgan, a successful saddle bronc rider, who falls in love with Kenzie Beckett, a corporate trainer he frequently runs into at the airport. Despite their mutual attraction, the relationship is going nowhere fast. Kenzie has sworn of men in general and good-looking, charming cowboys in particular. It doesn’t help that Tate is the most handsome, personable guy she’s ever met. If he hopes to win her heart, this Christmas cowboy is going to have to pull out all the stops.

The second book in the series, Wrestlin’ Christmas, highlights Tate’s friend Cort McGraw, a world champion steer wrestler. Sidelined with a major injury, Cort struggles to come to terms with the end of his career. Shanghaied by his sister and best friend, he finds himself on a run-down ranch with a worrisome, albeit gorgeous widow, and her silent, solemn son. Five minutes after Cort McGraw lands on her doorstep, K.C. Peters fights to keep a promise she made to herself to stay away from single, eligible men. When her neighbor said he knew just the person to help work her ranch for the winter, she never expected the handsome, brawny former rodeo star to fill the position.

While researching details for The Christmas Cowboy, I became aware of a great organization called the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund.

The JCCF is a non-profit organization that assists rodeo athletes who’ve sustained catastrophic injuries and are unable to work for an extended period. Because I think it is a terrific cause, now through Dec. 24, I’ll donate 10 percent of the net proceeds from all my book sales to the JCCF.

About the Book

Flying from city to city in her job as a busy corporate trainer for a successful direct sales company, Kenzie Beckett doesn’t have time for a man. And most certainly not for the handsome cowboy she keeps running into at the airport. Burned twice, she doesn’t trust anyone wearing boots and Wranglers, especially someone as charming and handsome as Tate Morgan.

Among the top saddle bronc riders in the rodeo circuit, easy-going Tate Morgan can handle the toughest horse out there, but trying to handle the beautiful Kenzie Beckett is a completely different story.

As the holiday season approaches, this Christmas Cowboy is going to need more than a little mistletoe to win her heart.
