Lee French & Erik Kort are Visiting! [Tour Stop]

“Andromeda’s Fall” by Abigail Owen

Published on… October 2014
Published as… Fantasy

Lee French’s Top Ten List

Top Ten Fantasy Inspirations

In order of my encountering and/or becoming somewhat obsessed with them (to the best of my recollection).
1. Charlotte’s Web
2. Roughly two hundred paperback novels I frittered away my allowance on as a teenager and no longer have, and probably wouldn’t recognize if you shoved one in my face.
3. Dungeons & Dragons
4. Mercedes Lackey
5. William Shakespeare
6. Medieval France and Jeanne d’Arc
7. The legend of King Arthur
8. Ancient Persia
9. Norse mythology
10. The Inquisition (nobody expects this on a top ten list)

About the Book

Adjusting to her new life as a soul-bound agent of the Fallen has Chavali pushing herself harder than ever before. Between learning to fight, dealing with idiots, and climbing stairs – lots of stairs – she has little time to waste on thoughts of the future. Or the past.

When another agent fails to report in, Chavali is sent on the mission to discover her fate. Ready or not, she saddles up for a new adventure with new dangers.

The search takes her to Ket, a coastal city slathered in mystery. There, she faces ghosts from her past and demons of her future as she seeks answers. All she seems to find are more questions.

Plague, murder, lies, espionage…this city harbors much more than meets the eye, and maybe too much to handle.

About the Book

Set in New England at the time of the American Bicentennial, BEST SELLER is the poignant story of a displaced young woman struggling to figure out who she is within the context of her hometown and the carefully masked dysfunction of her family.

“Everything can be fixed by writing a check.” Words to live by for Robin Fortune’s wealthy father, until he can’t buy her way back into college after she’s expelled for dealing pot. Now he chooses not to speak to her anymore, but that’s just one of the out-of-whack situations Robin’s facing. At nineteen, she feels rudderless, working in a diner by day and sleeping with a buddy from high school by night – all so strange for her because she was always the one with the plan. While her college friends plotted how to ensnare husbands, she plotted a novel, which she scratched out into a series of spiral-bound notebooks she hides in the closet. But now, there’s nothing. No vision, no future, no point. In fact, the only thing she feels she has to look forward to is that her favorite author, Maryana Capture, is paying a visit to the local Thousand Words bookstore. Robin surmises that if she can convince Maryana to help her get her novel published, she’ll finally get herself back on track. Except that life never takes a straight path in this intensely satisfying coming-of-age novel.

J. Hamlet is Visiting! [Tour Stop]

Hand of Chaos

“Hand of Chaos” by J. Hamlet (The Chaos Theology #1)

Published on… 4 September 2013
Published as… Dark Urban Fantasy

J. Hamlet’s Top Ten

Green, Green series by Jay Lake – A child sold into slavery escapes, overthrows an oppressive government, learns to be an assassin, and gives birth to twins. Oh, and she also defeats an evil God and creates another one in the process. It’s a hell of an adolescence and she’s a hell of a character. You see one of the most interesting and elaborate urban fantasy worlds through her eyes.

Bo, Lost Girl TV series – A succubus who refuses to pick between good and evil, overthrowing the order of things in the process? Yes please. She doesn’t leave a single fantasy convention standing.

Johannes Cabal, Johannes Cabal the Necromancer by Jonathan L. Howard – A scheming necromancer always on the run from his bets with the devil, Johannes is an anti-social sociopath. He’s also very funny.

Raylene Pendle (Cheshire Red), Cheshire Red Reports series by Cherie Priest– Cheshire Red, an elusive international thief who happens to be a vampire, stumbles head first into a toxic government conspiracy. Piece of cake for someone with her skillset, and she’s one of the most memorable narrators I’ve had the pleasure of reading.

Marquis De Carabas, Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman – One of the most cryptic and fun characters in a novel full of them. The Marquis in many ways epitomizes what all of urban fantasy should be.

Helena G. Wells, Warehouse 13 TV series – Is she a villain? Is she a hero? Who cares, because she’s awesome and she’s always one step ahead of the Warehouse and its agents.

Edgar, Night Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko – Edgar, a Day Watch mage, plays the good soldier for awhile but he’s always looking for a way out. Edgar is what every villain should fear, the minion who might be smarter than his master.

John Constantine, Hellblazer, DC Comics – Angels, demons, and monsters abound. Constantine is one of the only ones out there trying to protect humanity from all of it.

Hellboy, Dark Horse Comics and Movie Series – What’s not to love in a beer-drinking, cat fancying demon creature who fights against his fate and the forces of evil every step of the way.

Castiel, Supernatural TV series – Like Constantine (who his famous outfit is a visual reference to), Castiel is an angel reluctantly gets forced into protecting humanity and more specifically the Winchester brothers from all sorts of unearthly machinations. He even engages in a few himself in a moment of weakness. Despite his otherworldy origins, he may be the most human character of them all.

About the Book

Exhausted, cynical, and confused, Anna is always there to report for duty. She’s part of a clandestine government team that defends the nation against supernatural terrorism—a job that understandably leaves her life in shambles and drives her to drink a little more than she should. Toss in a fear of intimacy with a desire to have friends and lovers like a normal person and, well, Anna is a troubled soul wrapped in a special agent with arcane, magical powers. Waking up hungover at five–thirty in the morning with a zombie–infested apartment building in the heart of DC to deal with, she knows she’s got the makings of the worst morning possible.

Her team is its own challenge. A battle–scarred Nigerian shaman, a bookish shapeshifter, an inept summoner, and a brilliant but cantankerous wizard round it all out. Her partner, an immortal and cursed Paladin, is the only person she knows more jaded than herself. Getting them all to work together is never easy, with Anna often caught in the cross fire.

Their target, Ethan Morgan, is one pissed off necromancer. His brother was KIA by his own government, the victim of an experimental magical weapon they decided to test on the battlefield. Now bent on revenge and sponsored by one of hell’s most powerful demons, Ethan has a plan of his own to make us all pay. Anna and her team are fighting against the wake of destruction, but Ethan is always one step ahead. With the number of bodies he leaves and reanimates growing exponentially, Anna’s wondering if they’ll stop him before he engulfs everyone in an undead horde.

About the Author

J. Hamlet Author Photo
Everyone needs a hobby. And, like most people, I hope one day that my hobby will liberate me from my mind–numbing day job. I chose writing. Not one of the easier ones. I chose it at the tender age of 14, churning out terrible science fiction novels that heaped on the cliches and barely hidden tropes of all space operas. Thankfully, those creations reside in the prison of an old Commodore 64 hard drive and several 3.5″ disks (kids, ask your parents) in a landfill somewhere. And, let me be clear, the world is better for it.

Along the way, I kept writing. Through college. Through grad school. Through the beginning of my career, such as it is. I like to believe I picked up skills. I wanted to write novels that had things I wanted to see. Hand of Chaos, my debut novel, brings together elements of a spy thriller and a police procedural with dark and urban fantasy. I followed that with Scarred Earth, a serial alien invasion novel I’m releasing entirely through tumblr. I’m probably going about this all wrong, but I don’t know any other way.

Abigail Owen is Visiting! [Tour Stop]

Black Orchid

“Black Orchid (Svatura, Book Four)” by Abigael Owen

Published on…23 May 2014
Published as…Paranormal Romance

Abigail Owen’s Top Ten

Top 10 Princess Bride Quotes

The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies of all time – second only to Star Wars IV. In Black Orchid I had a lot of fun incorporating quotes from the movie as a way to show that Nate’s often goofy personality survived the other changes. It’s also his way of flirting with Adelaide. In my opinion, almost every single line from the film is quotable. I could go on for two hours (or the length of the film) doing it. Here are my 10 favs with a quick reason why. Hope you enjoy!

10. Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
I like this one because I think every person I know has quoted it at some point or other.

9. Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.
I think every closet romantic – and even some of us open romantics – love this concept.

8. You mean you wish to surrender to me? Very well, I accept.
I use this with my kids all the time. Drives them nuts.

7. You’ve been mostly dead all day.
What I love about this is that Westley just accepts that explanation.

6. Inconceivable!
The best part about this one is the line Inigo has eventually… “You keep using that world. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

5. Have fun stormin’ the castle!
The entire seen with Miracle Max is hilarious. One of the funnies in cinematic history.

4. Now more rhymes, now. I mean it. Anybody want a peanut?
Any time someone makes a rhyme – especially if it’s inadvertent – this pops into my head. You get some confused looks when you just say the peanut line. Lol.

3. Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder tooday.
Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam… And wuv, tru wuv, will fowow you foweva… So tweasure your wuv.

2. To the pain.
This works for so many things. I say it when I eat too much. Especially if I top it off with dessert.

1. As you wish.
The best line any man could ever say to the woman he loves. Especially when she’s being a total brat. Lol.

If you’re a fan of the movie and I missed one of your favs, please share! Or if you have your own quotable movie, I’d love to hear about it.

Forbidden Future

Forbidden Future

Published on… 12 September 2013
Published by… Masquerade Publishing
Published as… Time Travel/Fantasy

Top Ten Best Self-Published Novels [List by Terra Harmony]

1. Angelfall by Susan Ee – Currently holding the title of my favorite book ever! Initially self-published, Angelfall gained enormous popularity through word of mouth, mostly on Goodreads, I believe. Susan has since signed on with a publisher but she certainly knocked her first book right out of the park!

2. World After by Susan Ee – I have to throw in the sequel to Angelfall! It was just released and although this one was done by Skyscape (an Amazon publishing company), I believe Susan will always be a self-publisher at heart!

3. Wool Omnibus Edition by Hugh Howey – I love this series! And let me just say, although Hugh eventually signed on with Simon & Schuster, he made it popular all on his own. I especially love the fact that Hugh wouldn’t sign on with anyone that would cause the price of his ebooks to skyrocket – now that is loyalty to his fans!

4. Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire – Another self-publisher that eventually went with Simon & Schuster. This book had very mixed reviews (especially with my local book group), but I loved it so much I read it in one sitting.

5. Occupy Space by Grady Hendrix – Virtually unknown book and author. Why?! It was an awesome book and I couldn’t put it down! Think rednecks trying to get to space.

6. The Five Elements by Scott Marlowe – Another virtually unknown that you absolutely have to check out.

7. Theft of Swords by Michael Sullivan – I love this series, mainly because he is a local author and it is a true husband/wife success story with this series. He writes, she markets – and they are both rock stars at what they do. Michael is now partnered with Orbit Books for this series.

8. The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield – remember this one anyone? I think I read it in 5th or 6th grade. James started by selling copies out of the trunk of his Honda—over 100,000 of them, until he sold rights to Warner Books.

9. The Rising by Terra Harmony – Okay, I can’t have a list of favorites and not throw one of my own books in there. Mermaids and werewolves – intrigued yet? Get your copy!

10. Forbidden Future – Of course, I have to end the list with our newest release; the Forbidden Future Anthology. Time travel, anyone? Please check it out and be sure to leave a review!
